Every year, the 26th of September marks the European Day of Languages, a day to celebrate the joys of lingo! Foreign languages are an important part of our curriculum and we believe that every child should have the chance to develop this amazingly useful skill.

There are many opportunities for people in the UK to study or work abroad, but a lack of language competence often deters them from making the move. There are many valuable and unforgettable experiences to be had by spending time in different European countries, and we believe that language should not be a barrier.

Set up by the Council of Europe, the European Day of Languages has three general objectives:

1. Alerting the public to the importance of language learning and diversifying the range of languages learned in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding.
2. Promoting the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, which must be preserved and fostered.
3. Encouraging lifelong language learning in and out of school, whether for study purposes, professional needs, purposes of mobility, or pleasure and exchanges.

By marking the day at Southwold Primary & Nursery School, we hope to broaden the horizons of our pupils. Being equipped with the ability to speak another language opens doors to lucrative jobs, new cultural horizons, and a whole new way of looking at language itself.
